(This all sounds a bit odd. I wonder if I was doing something wrong? But anyway, it worked at the time).

  1. Reset to VGA using the Alt-F1 method.
  2. Install the GRADD driver as per its instructions.
  3. Shutdown, reset to VGA using the Alt-F1 method.
  4. Install the S3 driver as per its instructions.
  5. On the second page of the System Properties notebook, change the Monitor Type from Default to CUSTOM: Full S3 TRIO Chip Capabilities. (Note: This allows you to pick settings which your monitor may not be able to handle. Please consult your monitor handbook for allowable settings)
  6. Shutdown, reboot. DON'T reset to VGA.
  7. Use the Display Driver Install object in the System Setup group. S3VGRADD should still be listed among the options. Select it, and install. I got an error message during this process, but it didn't matter.
  8. Shut down and reboot.
  9. With any luck, you've still got the CUSTOM: Full S3 TRIO Chip Capabilities monitor option and can use any setting your monitor can handle, but are now using the faster GRADD drivers without the mpg problem.
