Andrew B. - about me

I live in Perth, Western Australia. I share my house with a housemate, Hannah, and a cat, Cyrix. Cyrix has sometimes bitten Hannah, but so far Hannah has restrained herself from biting back. Unlike many people who have both a cat and a web page, I have resisted the temptation to put a picture of my cat on the Internet.

My computer equipment runs OS/2 Warp 4, Netscape Communicator, Star Office and the DeScribe word processor. Alternatively it can boot Debian Linux, FreeBSD, Win NT or Win95b. I hope to upgrade soon to eComStation, released in August 2001, which is based on Warp and has all sorts of wondrous things bundled with it.
The hardware setup is always changing, piece by piece, but it tends to involve Cyrix or AMD CPUs and Legend graphics cards and memory. My I.S.P. is APANA, a non-profit organisation. My main e-mail address is: abolton@odyssey.apana.org.au
(Hmm, I think I spend too much time with my computer...)

I have 3 cars. One is a 1967 Humber Super Snipe. Unfortunately it's not working at the moment. The oldest is a 1958 Hillman Minx, which was my Grandfather's. And my dear friend Sweet Kay gave me her 1988 Lada Samara.

Trivia:

Favourite breakfast cereal: Quaker Harvest Crunch. Unfortunately not available in Perth, but I stock up whenever I'm in England. (which will be approximately never, now that I'm buying a house.)
Favourite coffee: Kenco brand. Unfortunately not available in Perth.
Favourite place to buy office clothes: Marks & Spencer. Sadly, they have no branch in Perth.
Favourite temperature: 8 degrees Celsius. With no wind, this is a great temperature. You can put on enough clothing to stay warm, but feel fresh, cool air on your face. Unfortunately not often available in Perth.
Favourite word: Callipygian. This is normally a descriptive word, but I have re-defined it as a noun. Fortunately these are present in Perth! I was so impressed that there was a real, official dictionary word for this. Mmmm, yumm!
Favourite camera: Sigma SA-300N. The reviews always say that the AF isn't quite as fast as other brands - and, well, it isn't. Focussing is spot-on, but it doesn't quite 'snap' into focus as some other brands do. Still, as long as you're not trying to photograph action it's perfectly adequate.
Favourite TV shows: Blake's 7 and Babylon 5.
Favourite architectural feature: Gargoyles.
Favourite bands: ABBA, And An A, Joy Division, New Order, gf4. Maybe E.L.O..
Favourite songs: Decades (Joy Division); Slipping Through My Fingers (ABBA); Be Thou My Vision (the hymn); and another ABBA one I'm too embarrassed to own up to.
My hobbies include cameras and photography, feeling guilty, and computing.
A bright, sad book: Melanie (Melanie Woss, edited and compiled by Fiona Giles.) Now (2002) reprinted as "Dear Me (Alone By Myself)". (Thanks for the info, Carley Marie!)
Favourite movies: Faraway, So Close!; Laputa: Castle in the Sky (Japanese animation); the ABBA movie. Also ... Paris, Texas ... The Princess Bride... and I quite liked Three Colours: Red (but I hated Blue and haven't really watched White).
Favourite rodent: Capybara. Unfortunately not available in Perth.
Why does everyone love James Bond? Isn't he sleazy and violent?
