Step 4: Accessing Your Home Page

To permit anyone to access your home page on the internet, the access priveleges must be set for index.html and all files that index.html links to or references. This must be done using a UNIX command on Odyssey:

• Repeat Step 2 above until you reach the "bash>" command line prompt
• Type chmod o+r ~/public_html/* at the command line prompt (this changes access priveleges to give all others read access to all files within the "public_html" subdirectory [the * is a wildcard and means all characters])
• Repeat the chmod command for all subdirectories below "public_html" that contain files linked to index.html
• Now, you or anyone else on the internet can access your home page by selecting the following URL:

  ~username
  where username is your user name.
