Step 3: Transfering the Home Page File to Odyssey
To transfer the index.html file to Odyssey, a software utility called "ftp"
can be used. Variants of this utility can be downloaded our
Resources page and permit file transfers from your PC to Odyssey
and vice-versa. The following process can also be used for transferring any files between
any directories (for which access is permitted) with suitable modifications:
- Download and install the "ftp" software.
- Execute the ftp software.
- Create a new session profile (or equivalent) called "APANA - username"
for example (you will probably want to transfer files on other occassions,
so having a saved connection profile will save time):
- Fill in the "Host Name" field (or equivalent) with the "Domain Name Server"
set of numbers provided on your APANA account notification.
- Leave "Host Type" (or equivalent) as "automatic detect".
- Fill in the "User ID" field (or equivalent) with your username.
- Fill in the "Password" field (or equivalent) with your account password.
- Leave the "Account" field (or equivalent) blank.
- Leave the "Remote Host" field (or equivalent) blank.
- Fill in the "Local PC" field (or equivalent) with the directory path containing
the index.html file.
- Make sure the "Anonymous Login" check box (or equivalent) is blank (anonymous
login does not permit changes to files on the host).
- Select "OK" (or equivalent).
- Or open a previously saved session profile and select "OK" (or equivalent)
(this should then establish the connection between your PC and Odyssey).
- Select the file on your PC that you want to transfer to Odyssey (in this
case index.html) [the ftp software should permit you to change directories
until you find the file you want to transfer].
- Make sure that you are in the public_html subdirectory on Odyssey (the
ftp software should permit you to change directories)
- Select the PC to Odyssey transfer option.
- Confirm that the file has been transferred.
- Close the ftp connection and exit the ftp software (if all transfers are completed).
